Abstract
Piroxicam is a new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent which has anti-nflammatory, anti-edematous, analgesic and antipyretic activities.
Total 92 paturient women with moderate to severe episiotomy pain were included in a double-blird parallel study including comparisons of piroxicam 20mg single oral dose group and aspirin 650mg single oral dose group with placebo at the Department of Obstetrics in the National Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, from July 1, 1984 to October 31, 1984.
Analgesic effects were measured in scoring system at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 hours after each different medications.
Results obtained were as follows:
1. Both piroxicam 20mg and aspirin 650mg were significantly (p <0. 05) superior to placebo in their overall analgesic effects having a trend with piroxicam being superior to aspirine.
2. Overall clinical effective rates based on responses of pain, tenderness and swelling were 96.7% in pain 90.3% in tenderness and 93.5% in swelling, respectively in piroxicam 20 mg group.
3. No particular side effects necessiated for the specific therapy were noted during or after piroxicam medication.
Each single case of nausea and headache in piroxicam 20mg group and each single case of epigastric pain and drowsiness in aspirin 650mg group were observed, which were improved and/or subsided without specific treatments.
